“Well here i am…..3 weeks out from the Under 23 World Champs in Budapest-
Hungary. Am sitting in a nice Hotel in Lausanne Switzerland where we had the
World Elite Sprint Champs today, consisting of half the distance we usually
do so 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.
So this was not my age division but open.

Started off, non wetsuit and had an ok start came out of the water about
10-15 so just out of reach of the first bunch which was about 5 guys. But we
caught them going up the hill (as many as there is around this area it was
about 400m long) but another slog fest on the bike it was today, noone was
willing to give an inch. Everybodys name was marked.

Some guys blew up the hill, and no wonder either, if you were a little bit
off your game going up that hill you were gone as Dylan experienced.
So after everybody hurt eachother going up the hill on the bike it was time
for the finale – THE RUN!

I didn’t position myself very well going into transition as i was mid bunch
and lost maybe 10 seconds on the leaders which proved costly for a few
places. But i did see one guy, a good mate of mine from Aussie (yes it is ok
to be mates with the “over the ditch rival” haha) he got tripped up by
another bikes chain and ripped his foot up, but he was in the middle of the
transition area getting run over by everyone as they scattered to get there
shoes!

I took it out hard…but in this case so did everyone else! i was sitting in
comfortable 9th place after 2.5km and knew if i put in another effort i
could catch up to 5th buuuuuut they just stayed there and well…..the last
400m i got just passed by 2 guys one including the under 23 champion from
last year, as i settled for a solid and consistant 11th.

Very pleasing result for me as i am continuing to progress and be
consistant.
Now the only problem is now for worlds…..that Jonathan Brownlee (Great
Brittan) well is racing under 23s and has been unstoppable all year, he won
today well ahead and just really has no weakeness. But thats sport and
racing theres always one. The next under 23 today was Frans loshke from
Germany (last years Under 23 champion) then me, we both ran the same time.
But last year there were 5 big names racing at world champs and all failed
to perform….so you never know!!
But in this game it’s never the opposition you have to worry about…only
yourself and thats the biggest battle!

This weekend isn’t over though, we have the world team championships
tomorrow which 20 countries will fight it out for the worlds best team-just
like a relay! but it’s super fast, super short and 2 guys and 2 girls in a
team, for the NZ A team it is Kate Mcllroy, myself, Nicky Samuals and Ryan
Sissons!!
LETF GO NEW ZEALAND!

so..next one it’s the big one and back to NZ base now to train with the team
for 2 weeks then Hungary!”
